AbstractUnsteadiness during "steady state" examination, which is one of the most serious factors causing error in the measurement of cerebral blood flow and metabolism using 15O labelled gas inhalation method and positron emission tomography (PET), was investigated with analysis of the practical values of the arterial blood gas and radioactivity on 325 examinations. Deviation of each value on arterial blood samples during each PET scan was evaluated as coefficient of variance (C.V.), and the histograms of each C.V. were presented. During "steady state" of C15O2 inhalation, the mean of the C.V. was 2.6% for PaCO2, 4.5% for PaO2, 6.0% for 15O radioactivity in arterial whole blood, and 5.7% for 15O in arterial plasma. During 15O2 inhalation, the mean was 2.3%, 4.1%, 6.2% and 5.2% for PaCO2, PaO2, whole blood 15O radioactivity and plasma 15O radioactivity, respectively. In C15O scan, the mean of the C.V. was 1.9% for 15O radioactivity in arterial whole blood.
