Abstract[Summary]Scintigraphy of bone and joint with 99mTc-labeled pyrophosphate and scintillation camera or whole body scanner was performed for 97cases with primary bone tumors, metastatic bone tumors, and other diseases of bone and joint. In 13 cases with primary bone tumors, positive results were obtained with exception of 2 of 5 cases with fibrous cortical defect whose results were negative. Any abnormal finding was not demonstrated on the X-ray films in 5 of 18 cases with metastatic bone tumors whose scintigraphies were positive. In some cases under chemotherapy, hormone therapy or radiation therapy, metastatic bone lesions were not demonstrated on scintigrams. All 8 cases with multiple myeloma showed rather decreased accumulation of 99mTc-pyrophosphate. The labeling procedures of pyrophosphate with 99mTc were simple and this preparation could be considered stable by descending paper chromatography in 85% methanol and clinical studies. It was concluded that scintigraphy with this material was useful to demonstrate the metastatic lesions in the bone and to determine the site and extent of the tumors.
